Losing a beloved pet is an emotional and heartbreaking experience, and if your pet passes away during the night, you may be wondering what to do next. If you plan to bring your pet to us for aftercare services in the morning, it’s essential to store them properly overnight to ensure they are preserved with dignity and care.
Here’s what you need to do:
1. Keep Your Pet in a Cool Environment
The most important step in storing your pet overnight is keeping them cool. If your pet’s body is left at room temperature for too long, natural decomposition will begin. The best way to slow this process is by placing your pet in the coolest area of your home, such as:
- A basement or laundry room with tile flooring
- A garage (if temperatures are cool enough)
- A space with air conditioning or near a fan
If possible, avoid leaving your pet outside, as this could attract wildlife or insects.
2. Use a Plastic Bag or Wrap the Body
To maintain hygiene and protect your pet’s remains, wrap them securely:
- Small Pets (under 15 lbs.): Place your pet inside a sealed plastic bag or wrap them in a towel before placing them in a bag.
- Larger Pets: Wrap them in a large towel, blanket, or disposable plastic sheet to prevent fluids from leaking. Then, place them in a large, heavy-duty plastic bag and seal it securely.
3. Place Your Pet in a Cooler with Ice or a Freezer (If Comfortable)
If you are unable to bring your pet to us within 12 hours, you may consider placing them in a cooler filled with ice or storing them in a freezer if you are comfortable doing so.
- Cooler with Ice: This is an effective way to keep your pet cool without freezing their body. Ensure the cooler is large enough and has sufficient ice to maintain a cold temperature.
- Freezer Storage: If you need to wait more than 24 hours, placing your pet in a freezer will preserve them. However, freezing will cause the body to stiffen, which may affect cremation or burial preparation.
4. Avoid Direct Sunlight or Heat Sources
If you cannot refrigerate, freeze, or store your pet in a cooler with ice, ensure they are kept away from warm areas such as:
- Sunlit windows
- Heating vents
- Fireplaces
Keeping them in a dark, cool location will help slow decomposition.
